How to Set Your Monitor Screen Resolution

Screen Resolution, So What?
Your monitor's screen resolution is determined by the number of pixels, or "picture elements" it displays. A 17" monitor display set to 800x600 is made up of 480,000 pixels arranged in 600 rows 800 pixels long. A 17" 1024x768 monitor is similarly arranged as shown in the graphic but it will display 786,432 pixels.

What this means is that if you switch from an 800x600 setting to 1024x768, you will see more, but objects will appear smaller. For example, a 300x200 pixel image on an 800x600 screen will still be 300x200 at the larger setting but it will take up less space.
