from
Dave Chamberlin
Arriving early in the year, the invitation announced the impending
May 8th marriage of David Stroh and Susan Mockenhaupt in Reston,
Virginia, alas a long way from California. But, voila,
there was to be a “west coast” reception a week later
in West Hills, CA, practically right up the road! So, a quick call
to Chuck and Leanne Kerchner in Claremont, CA, and a plan was hatched
for a road trip.
As we learned
later, the ceremony in Reston was lovely and attended by Susan’s
large west coast family (she is one of eleven children!), and Dave’s
dad and his mom, though frail, made the trip from Colorado. Judging
by the pictures and tales, a good time was had by all.
Now, we all
wondered how this union came about; who was this Susan Mockenhaupt?
Susan is a career professional and senior administrator in the National
Forest Service based in Washington, DC. Dave, who is currently Assistant
County Attorney for Fairfax County, VA, lives right up the street
from Susan, and has for some time without their ever meeting.
A lost dog and
the machinations of both Susan’s and Dave’s grown children
from previous forays into marital bliss, led to their meeting and
blossoming romance. Pretty soon, as often happens, Dave was living
at Susan’s place and Dave’s house was being remodeled
and spruced up for sale. Naturally, they have now determined that
Dave’s “new” place is nicer, so they’ll
peddle Susan’s house and move back to Dave’s. (My advice:
stay tuned.)
The
west coast reception was held at the home of one of Susan’s
ten siblings in a quiet neighborhood of West Hills northwest of
Los Angeles. Everyone wore the same clothes as they had at the first
reception in Virginia, and there was plenty of champagne and food
for all. It was a treat to see Dave again – it doesn’t
happen often – and to meet Susan who is lovely, witty and
charming. Their plan was to return briefly to Reston then take off
for a honeymoon in Paris – France, that is. The current plan
is that, in a “few” years, they will “retire”
and move to California, probably in the Santa Barbara area.
